Emergency Medical Technician
EMTs learn how to respond quickly to emergency situations regarding medical issues, traumatic injuries, and accident scenes.
Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings. People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care provided by these workers. EMTs and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities.
Course Description
The EMT Program spans 12 weeks and is designed to prepare graduates for work on an ambulance/rescue or in an emergency department that utilizes EMTs as technicians.
What is the difference between an EMT and a Paramedic?
There are several license levels of Emergency Medical Services workers. The nationally recognized levels are (from highest level of training to lowest)
- Paramedic (NRP)*
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)*
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- The State of Rhode Island has one additional level: EMT-Cardiac (EMTC)* which is above AEMT but below Paramedic.
[EJD note - where does this link to - click here for detailed descriptions of each level]
*Note: You must be an EMT to take the AEMT, EMTC, or Paramedic courses.
- Airway Management and Oxygen Administration
- Trauma Management, Ambulance Operations, & Triage
- Patient Assessment and Vital Signs [more]
Students will also receive separate training & certificates in:
- Basic Life Support / CPR
- Incident Command System (100, 200, 700, & 800)
- Terrorism Awareness for First Responders
Pre-requisites
- Must be 18 years old and have High school diploma or GED
- High school students may take the course but cannot be licensed until 18 years old and have a HSD or GED
Uniforms
Students must obtain school uniform and uniforms only are allowed to be worn during all phases of course training. Students must obtain blue EMT style pants, black shoes/sneakers/boots. The school will provide a uniform shirt. Approximate cost $60-$75 depending on brand. Because most programs meet 3 times a week, it is recommended to get 3 uniforms,. It is also recommended that students consider a school 'job shirt' (approximate cost $80) and a baseball cap (if desired, approximate cost $30). Job shirts and caps can be added to student accounts for students who are financing their education with payment plans.
- Students will also need a wristwatch for vital signs, a pen, notepad, and trauma shears (can be purchased at the school)
Textbook
- Prehospital Emergency Care (Pearson)
- 12th edition preferred but if you cannot find the 12th edition, you can use the 11th

- 11th edition (if 12th not available) ISBN: 978-0134704456 (approximate cost $100)
- You do not need to purchase a hard copy of the text if you wish to use our online e-textbook
- You do not need the workbook, we use online homework assignments
Certification / Licensure
The EMT Program (formerly known as EMT-Basic) at 911Programs prepares graduates to sit for the National Registry of EMTs certification exam. 911Programs is an authorized test site for NREMT but students do not have to take the NREMT exam with us. 911Programs is an authorized site for final practical examination and students will take their final skills exams here. Upon certification by the NREMT, graduates may apply for state licensure. At the current time, only four states (NY, NC, MT, AK) do not require NREMT EMT certification for licensure. The NREMT map is updated daily and can be found here: https://www.nremt.org/maps
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Meets
- Tuesday: 6-9pm
- Thursday: 6-9pm
- Saturday 9:00am - 4:00pm [1 hour break for lunch at noon]
Weeks to complete: Approximately 11-12 (depending on unexpected cancellations such as snow days)
Important Information:
- This is a "basic" level Emergency Medical Technician Program.
- In order to take a more advanced EMS program such as Advanced EMT (AEMT), EMT-Cardiac (EMTC), or Paramedic, you must take and pass a basic EMT course first.
- Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) written exam. 911Programs provides the national practical exam.
- To prevent confusion during training, this program complies with the National EMS Core Content and does not provide information on state-specfic procedures. Services that hire EMTs in Rhode Island (or any state) are responsible to train them in local protocols upon hire.
- The State of Rhode Island does not 'accredit' EMS Education Programs, they license them. 911Programs Career Training Institute is licensed by the Rhode Department of Health to conduct EMS Courses.

Payment Plan Options
General Parameters
- The minimum downpayment for 2024 is $350
- The lowest monthly payment is $99 (depending on downpayment)
- The longest term is 11 months
- At least half the tuition must be paid to graduate and get a certificate
- The lower your downpayment and/or monthly payment, the longer the term - however the term cannot exceed 24 months so either the downpayment or monthly payment has to be higher to meet the above requirements
- There is a finance fee on the amount you are financing so the larger the downpayment, the lower the finance fee
- There is interest on the unpaid balance so the sooner you pay off your loan, the less interest you will pay - just like any loan
- The more you put down and the quicker you pay, the less money you will spend in the long run
- Most popular, least expensive option is to pay in full before 1st class and receive a 20% discount off tuition
Example of payment plan using the minimum downpayment ($350): 11 monthly payments of $102.17
EMT Online-Hybrid Information
What is an online-hybrid course?
- Students attend their lectures online in an asynchronous format (meaning you watch the lessons when it is convenient for you - you do not have to attend a live lecture at a specific date/time).
- Students are allowed to "go at their own pace" but they are still required to complete the course within a specified time frame.
- Because medical training requires hands-on practice, the student must still come into the building for skills practice
- Written and practical testing is done at the building
What is the Tech Package?
- The Tech Package is an OPTIONAL add-on that is available for most programs.
- The Tech Package includes additional resources such as videos, narrated PowerPoints, etc
- Since the Tech Package contains complete lectures, they can be used to replace missed lectures in a traditional in-person course
General Information
- The base tuition is the same for traditional in-person courses and online-hybrid courses
- Traditional in-person students may purchase the Tech Package (online portion) for 25% of the base tuition
- Students enrolled in an online-hybrid course do not attend in-person lectures (but they may for a fee)
- In-person students who miss a lecture can make it up by in-person tutoring for $100/lecture or by purchasing the whole Tech Package or by purchasing the missed lecture material to view at any time ($50/lecture)
- Online-hybrid students may attend a lecture for $30 each or purchase the ability to attend all lectures for the same price as the Tech Package
How do Online-Hybrid students attend labs?
- Online-hybrid students must attend labs in person.
- It is advisable for them to attend when a regular lab session is going on because scheduling one-on-one labs is difficult and there may be limited availability for instructors; also, if a one-on-one lab is scheduled, the student may be required to bring their own assistant(s) to act as 'patients'. In a regularly-scheduled lab session, online-hybrid students will work with the in-person group.

"Hi Bill. I wanted to thank you for accepting me into your EMT program. I enjoyed your class very much even through the difficult and challenging times. In those hard times there was always someone there to answer my questions and I found all the lab instructors polite and willing to help. I have had a wonderful experience with 911Programs Basic EMT course and look forward to enrolling in your paramedic program if accepted. Thank you again."
- Jeff Lenihan
"All of my questions have been answered. I recently passed my NREMT exam on the first try, and now am starting my application for my RI state license. Thank you and all of the 911Programs instructors for preparing me so well for my NREMT exam, as well as for the course final and state psychomotor exams. The course was top-notch, and I am glad I was able to be a part of it. Thank you again."
